The Mustang Chamber of Commerce invites guests to visit Mustang’s claim to the Chisholm Trail and experience an integral part of Oklahoma’s history. Markers are easily visible from the paved roads, as well as sections of the land where traces of the trail are still visible since the sod ground has never seen plow. For the more adventurous, trail ruts are also visible from the gravel roads. If you have never experienced the Chisholm Trail, it’s the perfect time to come join in on this unforgettable adventure. You can ride the Trail beginning in Texas and make your way north to Kansas or visit sections of the Trail near your community.
The historical value of the Chisholm Trail is recognized by cities along the trail stretching from the Red River to the Kansas border. Mustang is no exception in taking pride in those who traveled the trail many years ago. The Chisholm Trail is a cattle trail in which 10 million cattle, 1 million horses, and 35 thousand cowboys used to drive cattle to Kansas. Cattle were then shipped to the Eastern United States to fulfill the demand for beef. The old trail passes through the western edge of Mustang and 13 Chisholm Trail Markers are located throughout the Mustang Public School district.
In the past few years, Mustang has been working to illustrate the importance of the Trail through tourism initiatives throughout the community. Together with other cities along the trail, Mustang is preparing an application for State Byway Designation. This process involves accessing every town along the route and preparing an inventory of existing tourism, history, and natural intrinsic values. Once designation is approved, the communities along the Chisholm Trail will have financial support to enhance and establish tourism for this stretch of land representing a significant aspect of Oklahoma’s history.
